A letter to my parents

Today, as we end September, which was the month of sickle cell awareness, I want to do something different. As I mentioned in my previous post, no man is an island and today I want to highlight two important people who have made this journey very memorable.

Dear mummy and daddy, I just want to say THANK YOU! I am who I am today because of your support and your prayers and your love. Having a child who has sickle cell has not been easy, but you have done a great job. Growing up, you never made me feel as if I was limited by my condition. You laid a strong foundation so I could see beyond my condition. You showed me the world and told me to dream big and then let me chase after those dreams without thinking about my limitations. Whenever I was sick, I never heard you complain about how tired you were having to take care of me. You were always there and are STILL there! I cannot thank you enough for supporting me throughout these years.

I remember when I was in the junior school, I would participate in P.E. even though I was not supposed to, and I would end up fainting on the field. Daddy, you would come running to the nurse’s office to see me. It didn’t matter what you were doing, you would leave everything to make sure that everything was okay with me. Whenever I was hospitalized, both of you would never leave my side and you made sure that i got the best care possible. Daddy, you even went to the extent of joining The Ghana Sickle Cell Association just because mummy and I have the condition. You have worked with them just to learn more and to help other people who have the condition. Mummy, you would make sure I take all my medication and when I didn’t, you would give me a looong lecture on why I had to. Your favorite quote was, “If you know how to take care of yourself, you will not bother other people with your problems.” That, has stuck with me and I have applied it in other aspects of my life.

Even as I am away, you manage to send me medication with any opportunity you get and even when I get sick, you will call me every minute (literally every minute) to tell me all the things I should do and all the medication i should take. You connect me to doctors all over and make sure I get the best treatment. Every time you call, you will ask about the weather and then continue to make sure that I am well dressed in the cold seasons.

So today, I dedicate this post to both of you because having you both as my parents is a blessing. You have been a stepping stone for me and I am able to share more about sickle cell anemia because you helped me navigate through my experiences. The things you have done are too much, I cannot tell it all. Thank you for being there for me and keeping me alive! May God embarrass you with blessings…so much so that there won’t be room enough to receive it! Thank you, mummy and daddy – Love, your Mama Obuo.

Sweetie, God has a plan for each and every one of us on this earth. When he gives you a task, no matter how difficult it is He equips you with the necessary tools to deal with it. God gave us, such wonderful children who have given us so much joy all these years. What more can we ask from Him, but to constantly praise and thank Him by taking good care of these wonderful gifts He has given us.
His grace and favour is just too much for us!
We’re so happy you appreciate us as your parents. We will consistently pray that God continues to guide and give you the wisdom in your bid to educate the public about the Sickle Cell condition. It is a mark of commitment and bravery and we are very proud of you.
